Frequently Asked Questions
-
So just what is RipIt anyway?
We're glad you asked! RipIt is the super simple tool you can use to make digital backups of your DVDs. RipIt doesn't compress the disc, so you get full high quality files that can be played out of your native Apple DVD player. No more carrying around bulky DVD cases!
-
What are the system requirements?
To use RipIt, you must be on a Mac and have OSX 10.5 or higher. I'm sorry, there is no version of RipIt for 10.4 or any PC. We never made one, so even if you beg, there's nothing we can do for you. :(
-
What kind of discs can RipIt handle?
RipIt is good for commercial discs. We get through some of the tough copy protection, so you can enjoy your DVDs. RipIt doesn't work as well with unencrypted discs, and doesn't work at all with data discs.
-
How long does a rip take?
RipIt will usually rip a disc within 35-40min. Compression can take longer depending on the video size.
-
Where do I report a disc that won't rip?
If you have a disc that just doesn't want to be ripped, please contact us. We'll order the disc for testing just in case it contains some super sneaky protection. Be sure to include the title of the DVD, it's ISBN (barcode) number found on the back of the DVD case, and the region the disc is in. Please be as detailed as possible when reporting. It will help us get things fixed faster.
-
What kind of file do I get when I use RipIt?
RipIt uses a .dvdmedia extension. This is a neat bundled package of all your audio and video files which plays with your Apple DVD player. In the RipIt menu under preferences you can uncheck the box for 'use .dvdmedia extension' and you'll get all your audio_ts and video_ts files unbundled. This is recommended if you want to use burning software to put the rips back onto blank DVDs.
-
How do I get the Video_TS files after I already ripped to .dvdmedia?
If you're ripping to a .dvdmedia format, you can right click the folder to 'Show Package Contents' and you'll be able to see the Video_TS folders.
-
So RipIt will copy my DVDs on to blank DVDs, right?
Nope! Sorry. You'll have to use burning software. Roxio's Toast or Popcorn, or DVD2One are good products to take a look at.
-
Can RipIt extract just the main title or individual scenes from a DVD?
No! RipIt focuses on being simple. So, we only allow you to rip the entire disc. Menus, special features, previews, everything.
-
How do I play my ripped file in iTunes?
Unfortunately you will not be able to play the .dvdmedia file in iTunes as a little conversion is necessary. Currently we are working on a compression feature that will produce high quality video that can play in iTunes but it is a work in progress so please be aware that bugs may exist.
-
Can I rip Blu-ray?
Nope! We're not currently supporting Blu Ray discs. Maybe someday in the future, but not today.
Licensing
-
Where can I recover my license number?
You seriously lost it?! Fine... We'll find it for you, but we need your email address. Simply go here to retrieve it!
-
Can I update RipIt for free?
You betcha'! Once you buy a license for RipIt, it's yours. We have never charged for upgrades. If RipIt seems to think you owe money, contact us and we'll get it sorted out for you.
-
How many computers can I install my RipIt license?
As a single user, you can install your license on as many personal computers as you'd like (i.e. a laptop and desktop) That's it! If you want more users and to install RipIt on more computers, you'll need to buy a Household Pack.
-
What's a Household Pack, and how do I get one?
A Household Pack allows you to install RipIt on up to five computers for five users. Even though it's called "Household" the computers do not all need to be under the same roof. You can buy the Household Pack with RipIt on the initial purchase. If you've already bought RipIt and love it sooooo much you need more, you can buy the Household Pack separately.
-
How do I move my license from one computer to another?
It's easy! Go into the RipIt menu and click on "Registration". There will be a deactivate button you can click. Beware! Once you click that button your RipIt license is deleted completely from your machine. You'll have to re-copy and paste your name and serial number into the app.
-
Why is RipIt rejecting my name and serial number?
Something may have been corrupted with your download. Try completely deleting RipIt off your machine, and reinstalling a fresh copy from our website. Carefully copy and paste your name AND registration code from the purchase receipt. Make sure there are no extra spaces attached at the end of either field. If you still have trouble, please contact us.

Features and Preferences
-
Where do my movies go?
RipIt by default puts your movies in the 'Movies' folder in your home directory. You can also search for them using spotlight. If you want to change this, or put the movies on an external harddrive, you can go to 'Preferences' under the RipIt menu. You'll see a drop down menu allowing you to choose where to put your ripped movies.
-
If I have dual drive, can I rip two DVDs at once?
Yes and no. We don't support this, but it has been known to work. We may in the future develop an interface to support dual disc ripping.
-
How do I make RipIt work with Front Row?
In your movies folder (where Front Row pulls from) make a folder with the movie title.
Go to where you store your RipIt files and select the movie you made a folder for. If you have the .dvdmedia extension on the movie, right click to 'show package contents'.
Take out the Video_ts folder and put it in the folder you made in your movies folder.
If you're using an external hard drive, make symbolic links from your account's Movie folder to point to the actual movie locations.
